A concise safety checklist covering pre-dive checks, in-water behaviours, emergency preparedness and post-dive care.
Safety Essentials: Before, During and After Your Dive
Safety is the foundation of enjoyable diving. Here’s a practical checklist you can rely on during every trip.
Before the dive
- Medical check: ensure you are fit to dive (no recent colds, ear issues or contraindicated conditions).
- Equipment check: complete the BWRAF (BC, Weights, Releases, Air, Final) pre-dive check.
- Plan the dive: agree on depth, duration, entry/exit points, and emergency signals with your buddy.
During the dive
- Monitor air & depth frequently; surface with a comfortable reserve of air.
- Maintain buddy contact and never separate beyond agreed limits.
- Avoid rapid ascents: always control your ascent rate and perform a safety stop (3–5m for 3 minutes).
Emergency readiness
- Know the location of the nearest recompression chamber (for deeper dives).
- Carry a surface signaling device (SMB, whistle) when required by local rules.
- Practice out-of-air procedures and share signals with your buddy.
After the dive
- Monitor for DCS symptoms: joint pain, numbness, dizziness, or unusual sensations — seek medical help immediately.
- Avoid strenuous activity and wait the recommended surface interval before flying.
Final advice
Diving safely is about planning, communication, and conservative choices. When in doubt, choose the safer option: shallower depth, shorter time, or a smaller group.
Respect the ocean and your limits — it keeps you diving for years to come.
