Tips & Tricks: Camera Settings for Vibrant Underwater Photos
A compact guide to camera settings and composition for clean, colorful underwater photos using basic housings or action cameras.
Tips & Tricks: Camera Settings for Vibrant Underwater Photos
Underwater photography is a skill, but simple settings go a long way toward better images. Here are practical camera tips for divers.
1. Shoot in RAW when possible
RAW preserves color and exposure latitude so you can correct white balance on the computer.
2. Use manual white balance or custom presets
If shooting JPEG, set white balance manually to avoid blue-green casts. Many housings or action cameras let you set a custom WB.
3. Aperture & shutter tradeoffs
Use the widest aperture you safely can for low light, but keep shutter speed fast enough to avoid motion blur (1/125s or faster for many reef scenes).
4. Use strobes or video lights correctly
Position strobes off-axis to reduce backscatter; keep lights wide and close to the subject for better color saturation.
5. Composition & approach
Get close, fill the frame, and move slowly. Use foreground elements and leading lines to add depth.
Quick gear checklist
- Spare O-rings and desiccant packs
- Clean lens/port before the dive
- Use a wrist strap or float mount for action cams
Good photos start with awareness: control your buoyancy, approach subjects slowly, and use light to your advantage. With practice you’ll capture the colors and stories beneath the waves.
